Stop stress in its tracks

Anxiety and stress are common foes in today's society, and if we aren't careful they can easily take a toll on our health and well-being.

While stress is something many people will experience all year round, the festive period brings with it a whole new level of money woes, responsibility and deadlines that crank our anxiety up a gear.

To ensure you don't get bogged down with stress and anxiety this Christmas, we have some helpful tips to keep your health and happiness levels high and stable.

Get moving

Exercise is fundamental for a healthier mind and body. Doing an activity such as running, dancing, swimming or yoga is an opportunity to cast aside worries and anxieties and kick-start the flow of endorphins around the body. You will feel instantly liberated, happier and revitalised.

Spend some time alone

Being in a busy working and living environment day in and day out means you are unlikely to get time to yourself where you can relax and put your mind to rest. If you're at work and having a hectic day, try going outside for a breath of fresh air. Spend five minutes focusing your mind to slow down the chatter and connect with the present moment. You will feel so much calmer and stronger from within.

Eat healthy snacks

Eating junk food is one of the worst things you can do if you're trying to reduce your stress and anxiety levels. Although tucking into your favourite chocolate bar or pot of ice cream may bring some relief, this is only temporary and will make you feel worse in the long run. If you're feeling run down and need an energy boost, reach for fresh fruit, a handful of nuts or a pot of yoghurt. These are light snacks that will digest easily and smoothly.

Do something spontaneous

Making a spur of the moment decision to do something different to your normal routine will bring a sense of variety and excitement into your day. It's easy to fall into a boring routine of the same old things, but spontaneity will remind you of the freedom and power you have to be as fun and creative as you want. Make it a goal to do one spontaneous act every week and see your happiness levels soar.

Hug someone you love

Hugs are immediately effective for boosting mood and healing feelings of sadness and stress due to the sudden increase in oxytocin levels. Holding a hug for an extended period of time has double the impact, as it lifts serotonin levels as well. This act of affection also gives you the opportunity to share your love and receive it back, which will make you feel more secure, safe and relaxed.
