Holistic healing remedies to aid digestion

The use of herbs to heal and promote well-being is a centuries old tradition, now most commonly known as herbal medicine.

Herbal medicine is a simple and effective way to look after your health. Herbs are viewed as living entities that willingly work with the human body to nourish and heal, and they are completely safe to use to help with a range of conditions.

One health concern that can really take a toll on emotional and physical well-being is poor digestion. To ensure yours is functioning smoothly, we have a list of herbs to add to your shopping list:

Dandelion

Dandelion is a well-known herb for helping to boost digestion, and the roots, stalks, leaves and flowers can be used in any form. Often you will find traces of dandelion in herbal teas, honey, vinegar and oil, and it is best taken before meals to help prevent heartburn and heal digestive woes. Dandelion can also help to reduce water retention and lower blood pressure.

Aromatic seeds

Fennel, coriander, cumin, dill and caraway seeds are commonly used to help ease digestive discomfort such as abdominal pains, flatulence and bloating. Many of these seeds are crushed and chewed for their medicinal benefits, but you can make your own aromatic seed tea by putting one teaspoonful of any one seed into a cup of boiling water.

Ginger

Ginger has many health benefits, but it is particularly useful for helping to speed up digestion and reduce inflammation in the gut. This eases the likelihood of bloating and flatulence after eating. Ginger also stimulates the absorption of nutrients in the body and helps the skin to release toxins. Add a spoonful of the fresh spice to tea, with honey and a little lemon to taste, and try to include it in your home-cooked curries and soups.

Peppermint

A soothing and calming herb, peppermint is an excellent digestive aid as it contains aromatic compounds that increase the production of digestive fluids. It is particularly helpful for relieving flatulence, indigestion and heartburn. You can find peppermint in a wide variety of herbal teas.
