DIY Ayurvedic foot massage
Ayurveda - also known as the 'science of life' - is a system of healing that involves treatments such as herbal remedies, panchakarma and massage.
The purpose is to connect the mind, body and spirit and restore balance to the doshas. This is to promote better well-being and help protect the body from illness.
While many people prefer to see an Ayurvedic therapist for tailored treatment, there are several DIY Ayurvedic practices you can do daily to enhance your self-care.
A simple foot massage is one such thing. Here's a guide to a quick and easy DIY Ayurvedic foot massage:
Cleanse and prep
Submerge your feet in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes to soften and cleanse before starting the massage. Pat dry then place your feet on a towel.
Choose your oil
There are many different types of oil you can use to massage into your feet. Some great options include coconut oil, aromatherapy oil, sesame oil and cow's ghee. According to ancient Ayurveda, cow's ghee is bursting full of essential nutrients and antioxidants, as well as antibacterial and other anti-viral properties.
Massage in
Begin by placing a few drops of your chosen oil in the palm of your hand and then start rubbing into your feet. Use the smooth surface of a small metallic bowl to continue with the rubbing motions to provide the best results. Rub it gently in both directions - on both feet - for around five minutes.
Finish
After this relaxing routine, pop your feet back into the bowl of water and wash. Pat dry then moisturise with foot cream. This massage routine can be practised any time of day but is probably most beneficial at night.
Benefits of this massage include:
- Helps to reduce stress and anxiety.
- Aids better sleep.
- Rejuvenates the whole body.
- Improves blood circulation.
