What I do to practice self-care and why I believe it’s important

There comes a time when the hustle and bustle of life becomes a subconscious priority, which means we may leave ourselves behind. It might be that you’re a parent, or you work full-time. Whatever it may be, it’s not selfish to take time out for you.Yesterday someone asked me, “Lauren, what do you want to achieve as summer approaches?”. This got me thinking about the many ways I could invest in myself. When I think of self-care, I think of ‘me time’, time for me to do what makes me happy. And taking time to do what makes me happy is me investing in myself.

At least once a month, I might get a manicure, treat myself to a massage or I will make time in the evening to have a bubble bath. Nothing beats a little downtime after a long day! And, I've recently taught myself to live in the moment.

If I stop and take time for myself, sometimes the noise of thoughts in my head, and the worries of all the things I need to do can become overwhelming. But taking the time to unwind, and sit and practise being ‘in the present’ has helped me with both mindfulness, and self-care. Lighting a candle and meditating, listen to the sounds of nature or relaxing with a cup of green tea just to clear my mind; these are a few ways I like to practise self-care. I think it’s important to do what makes me happy, even if that means skipping plans and having a lazy Sunday. There are days in the week where I will catch up with friends (which is always a great mood lifter) or I might go home and play catch up on my favourite TV show. Whatever I choose, I always find that scheduling self-care in my weekly routine not only helps me to relax, but also helps me be kinder to myself and my mental health. Please, don’t think that taking care of yourself is selfish, because it’s not - it is essential. Be kind to yourself, prioritise yourself, make yourself smile and remember, you are important too.
