What to let go of this year

Us humans always strive for improvement and, for some reason, this has equated to us striving for ‘more’. Whether it’s more money, more happiness or more success.

I can feel a shift in the air though and with the rise of minimalism, it seems as though we are starting to rebel against this idea.

Looking ahead to the new year, instead of adding to my list of ‘wants’ and ‘must dos’, I want to see what I (and you) can let go of. So, let’s see how we can lighten our load, shall we?

Limiting beliefs

These are essentially the negative stories we tell ourselves. So for me, this could be “change is scary”. This year is looking full of change, so I want to let go of that belief and replace it with something positive like “change is exciting”.

Being busy

At some point over the last few years, being busy has become a badge of honour within our society. After a period of being really busy over summer last year and as a consequence struggling with stress and anxiety, I decided to throw that badge out.

Being busy does not equal success. In fact, I’m learning, it equals poor time management! So this year I want to slow down, adjust my routines and let go of being busy.

Guilt

Guilt can show up in our lives in so many ways. For me, it’s shown up when I haven’t made it to the gym, when I’ve eaten one too many biscuits and when I’ve said no to a social occasion I really didn’t want to attend.

In the latter half of this year, I started letting go of this guilt, embracing the body positivity movement, listening to my body and prioritising self-care. I hope to continue this into the new year and show myself more kindness.

Stuff

This is going to be the biggest challenge for me as my room is pretty cluttered! I’m hopefully moving house soon, so I plan to use this as an excuse to go through my ‘stuff’ and get rid of what I don’t need. In general, I plan to be more mindful with my purchases and not buy things for the sake of it.

Tweet us and let us know what you plan to let go of this year!
