Tips to heal adrenal fatigue naturally

If you are feeling burnt out, you may well be suffering from adrenal fatigue. In this blog we'll look at the various stages of adrenal fatigue and what you can do to help heal yourself naturally.

Adrenal fatigue occurs when there is a disruption of your adrenal glands' ability to make the correct amount of cortisol in response to stress. Typically there are three stages of adrenal fatigue:

Stage one: feeling tired, but wired

This stage will see your body producing too much cortisol which can lead to insomnia, insulin resistance and weight gain. If you are in this stage you are likely to feel energised, but in an almost 'wired' jittery way.

Stage two: feeling tired and stressed

During this stage you may find you are waking up in the early hours of the morning and are unable to fall back to sleep. This broken sleep can leave you feeling tired and more stressed than usual.

Stage three: burnout

The final stage will often cause you to feel exhausted, no matter how much sleep you get. In some cases you may have low thyroid hormone levels.

If you recognise these symptoms, a trip to the GP can rule out any other potential causes. Your doctor may also need to prescribe medication, depending on your individual circumstances.

To help support your recovery and heal yourself naturally, try the following tips:

Re-assess your diet - Eliminating any foods that you are sensitive too and upping your intake of fruit and vegetables, lean protein and whole grain carbohydrates can help give your body a much-needed break. Try to include foods rich in B vitamins as they can help with energy production.

Go to bed before 11:00PM - Many people have a cortisol surge after 11:00PM, which can affect your ability to sleep, so try to get some early nights.

Hydrate - Dehydration is another hallmark of adrenal fatigue, so be sure to combat this with plenty of water. Adding fresh lemon juice or Himalayan sea salt to your water can help your body absorb more water into the cells.

Try a herbal remedy - Speak to a professional herbalist to see if they can prescribe a remedy to support your body as it recovers.

Build rest into your day - Schedule time to relax and rejuvenate. Steer clear of high-intensity exercises and try something more gentle, like yoga instead.

Change your perception - Your perception of success and what it takes to get there could be what's causing your burnout. Try to change your view and understand that perfection is not the definition of success.
