Thought Field Therapy (TFT)
Thought Field Therapy (TFT) is a tapping therapy that helps release emotional distress by stimulating energy meridians. Learn how it works and what to expect.
What is Thought Field Therapy?
Thought Field Therapy (TFT) is a holistic approach to emotional healing. It involves gently tapping on specific energy meridian points on the body while focusing on a distressing emotion or memory. This tapping sequence is designed to release blockages in the body’s energy system, helping to reduce the emotional intensity of a problem.
Often described as a type of tapping therapy, TFT offers rapid relief from issues such as anxiety, phobias, trauma, and stress-related symptoms. In many cases, individuals experience noticeable improvement after just one session.
How does TFT work?
Although the exact mechanisms behind TFT are still being explored, it’s believed that tapping on meridian points disrupts the emotional link between a troubling thought and the body’s stress response. This allows the individual to recall the memory or situation without experiencing overwhelming emotion.
After treatment, you’ll still be able to feel emotions - but in more appropriate contexts. TFT does not suppress feelings; rather, it helps bring emotional balance.
Origins of Thought Field Therapy
TFT was developed by Dr. Roger Callahan in 1979 during a session with a woman named Mary, who had a severe water phobia. While studying energy meridians, Callahan instructed Mary to tap under her eye - a meridian point linked to the stomach. To his surprise, her phobia and related physical symptoms disappeared.
Inspired by this discovery, Callahan continued to refine his techniques over the next 15 years, creating what we now know as Thought Field Therapy.
TFT in action: A global perspective
Since its development, TFT has been used around the world to support emotional recovery following traumatic events. Humanitarian projects in Rwanda, Kosovo, Nigeria, and the USA have successfully applied TFT for trauma relief following war, natural disasters, and terrorist attacks.
High-profile practitioners like Paul McKenna also use TFT in their work, praising its effectiveness in helping people overcome emotional challenges quickly and painlessly.
Understanding energy meridians
Energy meridians are a central concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). These invisible pathways carry qi (life energy) throughout the body. When this energy flows freely, we feel balanced and well. When the flow is disrupted, emotional and physical symptoms can arise.
There are 12 major meridians in the body, each linked to different organs and functions - such as the heart, liver, stomach, and kidneys. TFT uses these points to stimulate energy flow and restore equilibrium.
What to expect during a TFT session
A typical TFT session begins with your practitioner asking you to focus on a troubling thought or feeling. You’ll be asked to rate your level of distress, and the practitioner will guide you through a personalised tapping sequence.
Tapping is applied to specific meridian points - often on the face, hands, and upper body - in a precise order. This process aims to release the emotional energy block. Although the memory remains, the emotional charge is usually greatly reduced.
Most people experience noticeable improvement in one to five sessions, depending on the severity of the issue and individual response.
Can I use TFT at home?
Yes. One of the benefits of TFT is that practitioners often teach clients how to apply tapping sequences themselves. This empowers you to continue managing emotional triggers on your own - especially useful if symptoms return or new challenges arise.
Importantly, TFT does not require extensive talking. This makes it an ideal therapy for individuals who may be uncomfortable discussing painful experiences in detail.
What can TFT help with?
Thought Field Therapy is commonly used for:
- phobias (e.g. fear of flying, spiders, water)
- anxiety and panic attacks
- ptsd and trauma recovery
- grief and loss
- anger, shame, and guilt
- addictive urges and compulsions
- depression and low mood
Its simplicity, speed, and non-invasive nature make it an appealing option for many people seeking alternative emotional support.
What training and qualifications do practitioners need?
There are currently no laws in the UK regarding the training and registration of Thought Field Therapy practitioners. However, when searching for a therapist it is always reassuring to know they are working to certain levels of good practice. In the case of Thought Field Therapy, practitioners can choose to register with a professional association with its own code of ethics and complaints procedure and all members listed will have met certain eligibility requirements.
Below is a list of professional bodies for Thought Field Therapists. It is not an exhaustive list, but does feature the main organisations. To find out more information about accreditation visit the professional bodies’ websites below.
The British Thought Field Therapy Association (BTFTA)
The British Thought Field Therapy Association (BTFTA) is a well-established training institute of Callahan Techniques® Thought Field Therapy (a set of techniques established by TFT creator Dr. Roger Callahan) and it is also a directory of qualified practitioners. Listed below are the various qualifications which can be achieved and evidence of successful completion must be provided before practitioners are listed on the directory.
- Algorithm Practitioner (TFTalg): At this level, trainees are taught the basic skills needed to treat trauma, addictive urges, anger, anxiety, phobias, panic attacks, obsession (OCD), depression, grief, rage, shame and guilt. Many practitioners of other therapies - counsellors, life coaches and hypnotherapists for instance - choose to incorporate this level of TFT training into their practice as they feel it enhances their treatment.
- Diagnostic Practitioner (TFTdx): At this level, practitioners have been trained in Casual Diagnostic Procedures which allows them to offer individualised treatment for many psychological and physical problems.
- Voice Technology™ (TFT-VT) or Advanced Practitioner (TFTadv): These are the most advanced levels of training that can be achieved. Practitioners trained in Voice Technology™ will have undergone one-to-one training under the direct supervision of Dr. Roger Callahan himself. Advanced Practitioners have studied the TFT ''Optimal Health'' program which offers more generalised training to a similar level.
Upon joining, all potential members must also agree to abide by the association's code of ethics and complaints procedure.
