Staying calm in a busy lifestyle

September has arrived, schools have started and we are thrown back into routine and cold weather. With our busy lifestyles, the work-life balance can be difficult to achieve and maintain. The pressures to be social but also succeed in your career only add to the stress we may already be feeling.

Here are some simple steps to follow to achieve some peace; anybody can use them when needing a sense of calm if life gets a little bit too much:

Slow down and have a cup of tea

Tea can act as an excuse to have a little moment to relax. No matter what the season, a warming cup of tea can soothe and satisfy. For some of us, the simple act of making the tea can be quite meditative, the warm water and the deep exhale after the initial sip. Whether it's an English breakfast tea with a sweet biscuit, or a relaxing, floral tea before bed, remember to take the moment to 'just be'.

Practise yoga and meditation

You will be surprised at what 10 minutes of yoga and mindful relaxation can do for your stress levels. Yoga can help you connect with your mind and body, releasing some of the day’s negativity. If you do not have time for a yoga session, practise a simple moment of quiet time to increase awareness and clarity.

Surround yourself with loved ones

Finding your inner calm does not have to be a lonesome activity. Often, you will find your most peaceful moments come when you are in good company. Friends, family and lots of laughter are a vital part in releasing any negative energy collected through the day.

Invite your friends and family over, prepare some food and take a moment to just talk and laugh. You will be surprised at how the stress can appear to simply melt away.

Fill your home with colour

Studies show that flowers evoke pleasure and positive energy. Try to welcome fresh flowers into your home - as they are a multi-sensory experience, the bright colours, their scents and the feeling of bringing nature into your home can surround you with a calm sensation.
