How to stay healthy in the office

For those of us who work in an office, staying healthy is something we have to consciously think about and make plans for. Sitting at a desk for long periods of time increases risk of heart disease and diabetes, as well as affecting our back muscles.

Staring at a computer screen all day long also (unsurprisingly) has consequences for our health, as does the overflowing biscuit tin and germ-ridden desks. To stay healthy at work, take a look at the following advice.

Avoid computer vision syndrome

When we use computers for long periods of time our usual rate of blinking reduces which can cause dry eyes and blurred vision. To avoid this, take regular screen breaks, blink more often and if necessary use drops or a mist to boost eye moisture. It is also important to see your optician regularly to ensure your eyes are healthy and to check if you need glasses.

Keep your heart healthy

Regular exercise is essential for keeping your heart healthy. Now, we know it can be difficult to fit exercise in during work, but try to get up and walk around every now and then. Stand up when you take phone calls and walk over to talk to someone rather than using the office chat system.

Have healthy snacks

Whether it's a slice of birthday cake or 'happy Friday' doughnuts, chances are your office indulges in its fair share of sugary snacks. While a little treat here and there is fine, try to eat well most of the time. To avoid the lure of the biscuit tin, stock up on healthy snacks and eat these instead. Drinking plenty of water will also keep you feeling full and alert.

Sit correctly

Bad posture is a common cause of back problems - so avoid this pitfall by sitting correctly. Ask for a chair that offers good back support, ensure your mouse mat isn't too far away to avoid overstretching and keep your screen at eyelevel. Try not to stay in one position too long and avoid sitting cross-legged.

Clean your desk

Our desks often provide a lovely home for an array of different germs, from crumbs left-over from your mid-morning snack to general bacteria picked up elsewhere. Keep it clean by using an anti-bacterial hand wipe on your desk, keyboard, mouse and phone.
