Since I was granted the privilege of selecting my own shoes at the tender age of four or five, the outcomes haven't always been ideal for my feet. Invariably, I found myself drawn to those glittering, slightly heeled wonders. To my dismay, often these dazzling pairs did not come in my size, but that did not deter me, nor seemed it to be an obstacle, as I was always prepared to squeeze my feet into them.

Can the habit of buying snug-fitting or overly small shoes become a lifelong habitual pattern? Astonishingly, the answer is yes. I, for one, unknowingly nurtured this peculiar habit of purchasing too-small shoes since childhood. It's remarkable how this habit persisted, and how I consistently remained ever-ready to endure the nagging aches and pains that often accompanied each step I took.

My feet, the silent warriors beneath me, tirelessly bore the brunt of my ignorance, all the while sending desperate, unheard pleas for comfort. In retrospect, it's almost surreal how we, as humans, can become so accustomed to discomfort that it becomes a part of our daily existence, a discomfort we not only tolerate but sometimes even embrace as part of our identity.

If we are prepared to learn to recognise and change the undesirable and often harmful habits we accumulate in our lifetime, we can conquer many modern times challenges. 

It wasn't until I started practising the Alexander technique that I realised the error of my ways. Suddenly, my perspective on footwear did a complete u-turn. Now, I consider life to be far too short to be enslaved by shoes that merely please the eye. I prioritise the happiness of my feet above all else.

Shoes aren't just an accessory; they're an extension of the way we move and feel. So, the next time you slip into a pair of pleasing shoes, take a moment to ask yourself, "Do these shoes please me, or do they please my feet?" Remember, life is too short for shoe-induced agony. It's time to stride confidently in footwear that not only complements your style but also bestows upon your feet the love and comfort they deserve.
