Natural ways to boost immunity

The winter season brings with it a lot of great things - brisk winter walks, nights in by the fire and mulled wine - but it also brings with it some not so great things. Mainly seasonal colds and flu.

While obviously there are times when getting ill over winter is unavoidable, there are plenty of ways you can boost your immunity. Ensuring you have a robust immune system can protect you from winter bugs for a healthier festive season.

Take a look below for some all-natural ways to boost immunity.

Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is essential to our overall health and well-being. Helping the body’s natural detoxification process, drinking enough water will help to flush out any nasties that could affect the immune system.

Get enough rest

If you don’t get enough sleep and feel stressed, your cortisol levels (stress hormones) will rise. If cortisol levels remain elevated, it can lead to immune suppression - meaning your immune system won’t be working the best it can. Ensure you are taking time out to rest throughout the day and be sure to get enough sleep at night.

Eat a varied diet

Vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds are all packed with vitamins and minerals that help your body stay fighting fit. Having a varied diet means you are more likely to get what you need. Try to stock up on fruits and vegetables that are high in vitamin C such as kiwis, red peppers and broccoli.

Try turmeric

Turmeric is fast becoming a favourite spice of ours as it contains antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Try adding it to an immune boosting smoothie or make a delicious turmeric tea.

Add garlic

Containing allicin, which fights infection, garlic is great for preventing illness. Heat deactivates the key ingredient, so add it to your dishes just before serving or consider taking a supplement.
