Whether you’re new to complementary and alternative therapies or are a long time patron of holistic wellness, there comes a time when you need to seek out a new therapist. But how do you go about looking for one?
Should you take your chances searching on social media, or ask colleagues or friends to recommend someone? Do you know which specific treatment you want to book? And do you know what to look for in a holistic therapist?

We understand that looking into a new therapy can be quite overwhelming, especially if it’s one you don’t know much about. You may want to do some research before contacting a therapist, so you know what to expect and if it will help you.
On Therapy Directory, you can discover what types of therapies are available, how they can be beneficial and what to expect from a session. From crystal healing to massage, aromatherapy to reflexology, you can browse more than 40 types of holistic practices on our website.

Ask for recommendations
While we shouldn’t solely rely on someone else’s experience (as everyone will have their own preferences), it can be a good method to help you find a therapist. Particularly if you know someone who has already tried the treatment you’re looking for, ask them about their experience. What did they think and do they have any advice for you?
If they had a positive experience and would recommend their therapist to you, you can use our site search (which you can find in our top toolbar) to find their name.
Decide on the important factors
Much like when looking for a new job or a new home, you need to decide on the factors that are essential, and which ones you can afford to compromise on.
Some questions to consider:

- Would you like a mobile therapist - for them to come to you?

These factors can affect your search criteria, so it’s worth knowing exactly what you’re looking for before you commence your search.

Once you’ve decided which type of therapy is right for you, the next step is to find a therapist you resonate with. To make the search easier, we encourage all our members to fill their profiles with as much information as possible. This means you can learn more about them, the way they work and if they are the person to help.
To find a therapist in your local area, you can use our advanced search tool. You can refine your search by therapy, location, type of therapist and any other keywords you feel are relevant.
Browse some therapist profiles
Once you’ve clicked ‘search’ you’ll land on a page with a list of therapists near your location.
The next step is to click on their name to view their profile, learn more about them, and find their contact details and fees. You’ll notice some organisations are listed below the individual therapists too, some of which may also be able to offer you support.
Key things to look out for
Our therapists list a lot of information on their profiles and it can be helpful to notice some of the extra features that can help you find what you’re looking for.
Pay particular attention to the following whilst browsing profiles:
- types of session available (in person, online and home visits)
- accessibility
- availability
Within a therapist’s profile, you can find out more specific information about their qualifications and experience, as well as what they can help you with. They may provide more guidance about their areas of speciality and how long they have been helping clients within these areas.

Once you’ve narrowed down your choices to a few professionals who fit your criteria and who you get a good ‘feel’ for, the next step is to approach them. Simply send them an email or give them a call to book an initial consultation.
