Four ways to relieve stress

Whilst some stress is good and can help us feel motivated, accomplish tasks and embrace the daily challenges we face, too much stress can negatively affect your body.

People are affected by stress differently, but recognising signs of stress and being mindful of how to cope will improve overall quality of life. There are a number of practises and habits you can incorporate into your life to keep the inner you calm and relaxed. These can include:

Chinese herbal teas

A particular group of herbs commonly used within Chinese herbal medicine are “adaptogens”. They are thought to be perfectly suited to reducing stress and offering a sense of calm. During emotional, physical and environmental stress, the liver is at the root of the effect. Drinking detoxifying teas is a good way to promote healthy digestion.

Dandelion is another common stress-relief tea. A plant known for its persistent survival, strength and energy, it is the perfect match for a warming cup of tea.

Brew dandelion root tea mixed with cloves and cinnamon to create a warm, spicy chai that detoxifies, nourishes and strengthens the liver.

Acupuncture

When you are stressed, there is an “energetic traffic jam”. Acupuncture treatment can restore the circulation of blood and energy, open up pathways to relax muscles and release endorphins, the body’s natural painkiller.

Fruits and vegetables

During stress, a chemical called cortisol is released, increasing carbohydrate and sugar cravings. Instead of reaching for the chocolate bar, opt for liver detoxifiers and cleansers such as berries, cabbage, avocado, spinach or pomegranates.

Not only will you be giving your liver a helping hand, you will be nourishing your body with plenty of essential nutrients and vitamins that promote good health.

Meditation

Ever increasing in popularity, meditation has now been recommended by the MayoClinic as a simple, effective stress reliever. Practising meditation helps you recognise and maintain a calm state of mind. It can help you reduce negative thoughts, increase self-awareness and give you a new, clear perspective.

Take a few minutes of the day to close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing. It can be extremely powerful when going through a stressful time.
