DIY reflexology tips

Stress and tension are often the root cause of certain illnesses (such as headaches, IBS and insomnia) and both stress and tension are issues that can be tackled with reflexology.

Using pressure/massage on areas of the feet or hands, reflexology aims to encourage the body to heal naturally as well as ease stress and tension.

Visiting a reflexologist is recommended, however the following DIY techniques offer a nice boost for in-between sessions.

To lift mood

You can give yourself a quick mood boost by working on the reflex for the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. Do this by massaging your big toes or thumbs, focussing on the widest part of the toe/thumb. You may find this area is a little sensitive at first, but this will improve the more you massage.

To reduce stress

When you need an energy lift, focus on the areas relating to your adrenal glands. Stimulating this area can help to lower blood pressure and reduce inflammation. To activate this reflex, massage the middle inner sides of your feet/hands.

To boost alertness

When you need to be more mentally alert, focussing on the reflex relating to your thyroid gland is recommended. Use your thumb to walk around the base of your big toe or thumb to stimulate this area.

To eliminate tension

Massaging the reflex relating to your nervous system helps to reduce both mental and physical tension. To do this you need to focus on the reflexes relating to your spine and brain. Stimulate these areas by massaging the tips of your big toes and the inside of your foot.
