Being in tune with yourself

Our body is an incredible thing. Often it knows long before our mind when it’s time to slow down. In today’s blog we want to talk about listening to yourself more closely, whether this be what your body is telling you, or what your inner voice is telling you.

We tend to go through life at 100 miles an hour, without stopping to assess how we are, physically or emotionally. Because of this we can suddenly get overwhelmed, or even ill.

Checking in regularly with both your physical self and your emotional self can really help with this. Below we look at some ways to do this:

Listening to your physical self

  • Take moments throughout the day to stop and observe. How do you feel physically? Are there any areas of tension? Are you tired? Just noting these feelings can help you be more self aware and come up with routines to avoid this (like going to bed earlier or booking regular massages).
  • Plan ahead. If you know you are susceptible to certain tensions or ailments, think about what you can do day-to-day to help improve it. For example, if you suffer from bach ache, you may want to speak to a professional about your posture.
  • Get support. Sometimes we need to tap into the knowledge and experience of others. If you think you could benefit from holistic healing, see what therapies appeal to you and learn more about supporting your health with complementary therapy.

Listening to your emotional self

  • Tune in regularly. Make it a habit to sit with yourself at the beginning of the day, breathe and set an intention for the day. Then at the end of the day, check in with yourself - did you stay true to your intention? How do you feel about the last 24 hours?
  • Question yourself. When you react strongly to something emotionally, question yourself - what is it you’re really reacting to? If it’s positive, how can you keep this feeling? If it’s negative, how can you move past it?
  • Talk to someone. Sometimes we can struggle to cope with our emotions alone. Talking to people we care about can be a huge help here, as can talking to a professional.
