Make your bedroom a sanctuary

Our bedrooms are the first thing we wake up to and the last thing we see at night, so it is important that they have a positive effect on our moods and well-being.

It has been noted how certain colours, the placement of photos and furniture and the light of the space can affect how we feel. You’ll know what we mean if you have ever come home after a long day to a messy room, instantly feeling anxious and unsettled!

If you are unable to relax or feel frustrated with your sleeping space, take a look at the following tips to create the ultimate oasis.

Lights - One of the most important parts of creating ambience is lighting. It has been recommended that people avoid bright or fluorescent lights in the bedroom, opting instead for floor or table lamps. For an added cosy effect, choose a warm-toned bulb.

Textures - If you are after a comforting, cosy space, choose texture and lots of it! Purchase soft bedding, plush cushions and thick, fluffy blankets to help you feel comforted and protected after a rough day. (Remember to keep your bedroom cool, or all of these layers will leave you with a hot, restless sleep!).

Neutrals - Many people make the mistake of decorating their bedroom with bright, bold patterns. However, it has been recommended that sticking to neutral colours for your space is much more calming.

Feng Shui - In traditional Feng Shui, the bed should be facing the door so that you are viewing the entrance to the space. This is thought to subconsciously promote feelings of safety and control.

Organisation - The key to feeling at peace in your sleeping space is organisation. A cluttered, messy bedroom acts only as a reminder of things that need to be done. It is also important to have a clear out every now and then – if something reminds you of a negative experience or time in your life, get rid of it!
