Beat fatigue naturally

When we're tired it is easy to simply reach for the coffee and think 'this is just the way life is', but it really needn't be. While fatigue is indeed common, it should not be considered unavoidable.

Instead of looking to substances like caffeine to give you a boost, try these natural tips:

Correct your posture

Sitting or standing in a slouched position can make you feel tired as it places excess strain on your back and neck. Slouching also makes your body work harder than it should. Sitting/standing with correct posture is easier on the body and improves the flow of oxygen to the brain, making you feel more alert.

Get some natural light

Exposing your body to natural light has been shown to maintain higher energy levels in those suffering from fatigue. Open the curtains or, better yet, head outside for a walk to get some sunshine. The fresh air will also help to wake you up.

Use aromatherapy

Use scents like peppermint, jasmine and citrus oils to lift your spirits and increase alertness. Pop a few drops onto a handkerchief and keep it to hand when you feel fatigued.

Surround yourself with vibrant colours

Shades of orange, yellow and red are known for their energy boosting effects. Why not dress yourself in these colours on days when you know you'll need an energy lift? Alternatively you could place some brightly coloured ornaments on your desk.

Listen to uplifting music

There are lots of studies out there that show how relaxing music affects the body, so it makes sense that energetic music has the same effect. Listen to something upbeat to rev up your energy levels when you need it.
