Aromatherapy oils to try now

Aromatherapy harnesses the power of essential oils to help improve mental and physical well-being. If you are new to the practice or simply want to know which oils to try first, this guide is for you.

Soothing: Roman chamomile

This sweet, floral oil comes from steam distilled from the flowers of the plant. Not only does chamomile tea help to lower anxiety levels, but the scent of the oil is also just as effective at calming the mind and helping to soothe feelings of agitation. Physically, it can be used to help relieve inflamed skin and pain from aching joints.

Use it: Vapourise in your room or add a few drops to your bath to induce calm and relaxation. Alternatively, if you are brewing chamomile tea to drink, cover it as it steeps to ensure the scent doesn’t escape in the steam.

Stress-relieving: Frankincense

This warm, soothing oil is ideal for calming the emotions and supporting you during times of stress. Traditionally used in meditation, this oil is great for focusing the mind.

Use it: Inhale from a tissue/handkerchief during stressful moments.

Balancing: Lavender

A firm favourite of many, lavender also comes from distilled steam of the flowers. Balancing emotion, lavender is known for its relaxation qualities. One of the best-known oils for helping insomnia, lavender is also fantastic at easing anxiety and relaxing the body. Helping to sedate nerves and slow heart rates, lavender is ideal for those suffering from physical symptoms of stress and anxiety.

Try it when you have a tension headache or are struggling to sleep.

Use it: For headache relief, try applying a diluted solution to pulse points or your temples to surround yourself with the soothing scent. Alternatively, run yourself a bath with some lavender before bed and use a few drops of the oil on a cloth within your pillowcase for a restful night’s sleep.

Refreshing: Eucalyptus

This fresh and revitalising oil can stimulate the mind while refreshing the senses. Great for when you’re feeling congested and fuzzy-headed, try it when you need a little clarity.

Use it: Place two drops in a bowl of warm water and inhale the steam to clear airwaves or add a couple of drops to tissues/handkerchiefs.

Energising: Citrus

Orange, lemon and grapefruit scents are fantastic at awakening the senses and encouraging feelings of joy. Ideal for times when anxiety is making you feel low, citrus scents are perfect for invigorating body and soul; the perfect pick-me-up when energy levels are low. Physically, citrus oils are also a great antibiotic and help to deter bugs. Try it when you’re feeling tired and need a boost of energy.

Use it: Vapourise to deter airborne bugs or add some drops to a handkerchief and inhale throughout the day when energy levels are dwindling. Alternatively, try adding a few drops of citrus oil to a cup of almond oil for a nourishing body moisturiser.

Grounding: Pine

Clarifying and grounding, pine works brilliantly at pulling you back to the present moment. Use at times when your mind is racing and you’re struggling to focus on the here and now.

Use it: Add some oil to a diffuser in your house or invest in a pine needle-filled pillow to hug in times of need.
