How to use crystals for studying

Student life has changed immensely since the pandemic. Whether you're learning remotely, a university fresher, or working towards finals, many students around the UK are finding increased levels of stress, anxiety, and feelings of isolation.

Perhaps you're having concentration issues, are worrying about exams, or finding work after university. You may be simply struggling with the lack of freedom and social interaction.

If you’re looking for some extra support, why not tap into the healing powers of crystals? Their vibrations help clear blocks in our energy system and work to restore balance on the spiritual, emotional, and physical levels.

Crystals have been around forever; some buried deep within the earth, others growing in caves and rocks, some created from pressure, others by heat.

They all hold their own special energy and have been used for healing for thousands of years. Using crystals is a beautiful way to bring healing into our lives.

Where to start?

You can begin with one or start your own mini-collection. I have put together a small selection of stones that bring emotional balance, feelings of calm, release of self-pressure, and encourage self-love.

Others will help with concentration issues, help clear cluttered brains, encourage inspiration, and motivation, and bring renewed confidence. There are also a couple of grounding and protective stones to add to the mix, as well as those which help reduce EMF (electromagnetic frequencies).

Where can I buy crystals?

There are lots of fabulous shops selling crystals and I always say, if you walk into a shop and you feel comfortable, then that’s the right place for you to buy from. However, if you feel uncomfortable for any reason, then it’s not the shop for you.

I often recommend the CrystalAge.com website as they are very reasonably priced and have a wide selection, so are a really good starting point. Have a look around and see which sites you’re drawn to, your intuition will guide you.

Which type of crystal should I choose?

You can choose cut crystals which are pretty but more expensive, tumbled which are smooth and best for carrying in your pocket or putting under your pillow, or raw stones which are in their natural, rough state and often cheaper.

9 crystals to help with studying

Crystals and stones can aid with mental focus, concentration, and memory, which makes them the perfect tool to help with studying. Whether you’re looking for crystals for academic success, to help you prep for exams, or to learn something new, here are some stones you may like to try.

Clear Quartz

All-round healer, harmony, clearing.

Known as the "Master Healer" stone, Clear Quartz is a magnificent stone for clearing away negativity, bringing harmony, and bringing in healing energy. It also enhances creativity and inspiration and brings clarity of mind so will help with assignments and coursework.

Blue Calcite

Emotionally soothing, bringing inspiration and focusing the mind.

If you’re looking to make changes and want to focus your mind and bring in new ideas, you can use this stone alongside making positive affirmations. It releases creative thoughts, expressions, and ideas so that they can flow, whilst bringing a sense of calm.

Green Calcite

An emotional balancer, releaser of stress, sadness or negative feelings.

If you’re looking for a renewed sense of purpose and vitality, this stone helps us to make positive changes, brings emotional balance, helps us to release resentment, and encourages kindness to ourselves and others. It’s also really helpful for those suffering from social phobias.

Amethyst

Calming, bringing feelings of peace and balance, releasing anxiety.

This is a key stone for bringing a sense of calm amidst the storm, settling emotions, and bringing a feeling of protection and peace. It’s also wonderfully supportive for those going through grief, brings inner strength and balance, and a great help if you’re trying to complete a project.

Rainbow Fluorite

Calm, clarity, confidence.

This is a very stabilising stone that can help untangle thoughts and clear a cluttered brain, bringing clarity and confidence. Due to its stimulating effect on the brain, it encourages balanced and coherent thought processes and can help overcome worries about the future.

Carnelian

Bringing courage, confidence, and action.

A great stone to kick-start you into action so that you can achieve your goals and bring your dreams to fruition. It will fill you with a renewed sense of vitality, release negative fears and emotions that hold you back, and set you off on a path of purpose. Carnelian instills courage in all areas, including helping the timid speak freely and with conviction.

Black Tourmaline

Grounding, balancing, protection.

Black Tourmaline is such a useful stone for clearing the negative energies around us, keeping us protected, and helping us to stay positive. It has a deeply calming and grounding effect that reduces anxiety, encourages feelings of being safe, and helps us become less affected by any negativity around us.

Hematite

Grounding, turning negative into positive, calming.

Good for helping us stay grounded and present and helps transform negative energies into more positive ones. If you tend to hold yourself back, this stone will give you confidence and help you unleash your natural talents.

Rose Quartz

Brings emotional healing and balance, releases stress, and encourages self-love.

A gentle stone that brings warmth and loving energy, whether towards ourselves or others. This stone brings a sense of peace, assists us in accepting change in our lives, and brings feelings of hope and trust in the universe.

EMF protection crystals

You can use Black Tourmaline, Amethyst and Hematite for reducing electromagnetic frequencies (EMF). However, be careful not to place electromagnetic crystals too close to your laptop as they can cause corruption in the hard drive.

Caution: Natural Hematite may contain a very slight magnetic charge. Items marketed as "Magnetic Hematite" are not actually Hematite at all and should be avoided by those wearing a pacemaker.

How to use crystals

If you’re looking to improve your sleep, place them on your bedside table or under your pillow. Even the little ones can be really powerful, so don’t start by placing 10 of them under your pillow at night or you may find you struggle to sleep! Start with one and build up.

For concentration, put them on your desk. For general healing, carry them in your pocket throughout the day. Simply pick the one or ones that feel right for you each day. You may find you pick the same stone every day for a week or different ones each time. Use your intuition. Have fun!

How to cleanse your crystals

Cleanse your crystals as soon as they arrive as they can absorb and carry a build-up of negative energy. You never know where they have been and who has owned them since the time they were excavated. Most good suppliers will clear and programme them with good intentions before selling them on, but I recommend doing this again yourself when they arrive.

You can read more about methods to cleanse crystals in one of my previous articles.

Once cleansed, you can hold your crystal between your hands and set a clear intention of what you would like it to help with, either by saying the words in your head or out loud. This is called programming your crystal.
