What are the Akashic records?

Last updated 25th September 2026 | Next update due September 2029

The Akashic records are a spiritual concept that practitioners describe as a record of events, thoughts, feelings, and experiences across time. Some people explore the Akashic records as part of their spiritual or personal development.

Here, holistic therapist and Akashic record healer Melissa Stonard explains more about the Akashic records, including how they are used and what you might expect from a reading.

Practitioners describe the Akashic records as a spiritual database of every experience you have ever had, including your thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Within this spiritual tradition, the records are believed to contain experiences from this lifetime and past lives.

You can think of it as one huge library of memories. Within the practice, it is believed that people, animals and even places can have their own Akashic record.

The modern concept of the Akashic records developed within Theosophy in the late 19th century and was later explored by Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner. The term comes from the Sanskrit word akasha, meaning ‘sky’, ‘atmosphere’ or ‘aether’.

Akashic record reading and healing

There are Akashic record readers and healers, and some practitioners offer both. During a reading, practitioners may explore what they describe as past-life experiences, as well as patterns, beliefs, or feelings you would like to understand more.

Some practitioners also offer Akashic healing alongside a reading, with the aim of helping you reflect on beliefs, emotions or recurring experiences. Some practitioners also teach people how to explore the Akashic records themselves, and may not require previous experience.

Soul contracts in Akashic healing

Within the practice, some practitioners believe the Akashic records contain details of ‘soul contracts’ – spiritual agreements believed to have been made before birth and which may continue across different lifetimes.

During a reading or healing session, a practitioner may explore these beliefs with you, particularly in relation to relationships or recurring patterns in your life.

What are Akashic records used for?

People may explore the Akashic records for spiritual reflection and personal development. Practitioners believe that readings can offer insight into experiences, emotions and patterns in your life, including those that may feel difficult to understand or explain.

Some people use Akashic record readings to reflect on relationships, recurring patterns, limiting beliefs or questions about their direction in life. Within the practice, these experiences may also be explored in relation to past lives or ancestral patterns.

Akashic healing may also be offered alongside a reading, with practitioners describing it as a way to explore beliefs or emotional patterns.

Experiences vary, and these spiritual practices should not replace appropriate medical or mental health support.

What happens during an Akashic record reading?

Some people may find an Akashic reading and healing session relaxing or reflective. Practitioners may use sessions to explore aspects of your life and what they describe as past-life experiences, ancestral patterns or wounds.

During a session, the practitioner will usually ask what you would like to explore before beginning the reading. How practitioners approach or describe accessing the Akashic records can vary, so it's worth asking what to expect before booking. Sessions may be offered in person or online.

What might I experience during a session?

Experiences will vary from person to person. Some people describe feeling relaxed, reflective or energised after a session, while others may not notice any particular change.

How many sessions might I have?

The number of sessions varies from person to person and depends on what you hope to explore. Some people may choose to have a single session, while others may decide to have further sessions.

How much does Akashic record reading cost?

The cost of an Akashic record reading can vary depending on the practitioner, the type of session offered and its length. Some practitioners may also offer healing as part of the session. Check individual practitioner profiles for information about fees and session length before booking.

How to choose an Akashic record reader and healer

Some practitioners offer training in reading the Akashic records. If you're interested in learning more, you may prefer to begin with a practitioner who can explain their approach.

Akashic record reading and healing is not a regulated therapy, so it's important to ask a practitioner about their training, experience and approach before booking. You may also want to ask what happens during a typical session, how long it lasts, what it costs and whether there is anything you need to do beforehand.

Take some time to read about the practitioner and their approach to make sure you feel comfortable with what they offer. Be cautious of anyone making guarantees about the results of a reading or claiming that Akashic healing can diagnose, treat or cure physical or mental health conditions.
