The Second Degree – Okuden is also known as ‘Practitioner Level’ and is for anyone wanting to practice Reiki as a profession, or who wants to further their experience on their Reiki journey. Mikao Usui’s intention at this level was for furthering self-healing and spiritual development. This degree will take you to a deeper level of consciousness and oneness.

The Five Elements in relation to Okuden

After completing the first level (Shoden) within the system of Reiki, the student must practise on themselves. After a period of time an Okuden student will have achieved a new level of confidence and balance. At this point, which is unique to each student, it will become time to begin working on the ‘self’ with a new level of energy – this level of energy is the essence of Okuden. Through Okuden, the student develops many of the skills taught in Shoden.

Okuden means ‘Inner’ or ‘hidden teachings, which means that the tools taught within this level are for your own spiritual development. These tools involve symbols and mantras.

Okuden traditionally contains two separate parts know as Zenki (Japanese translation: first part) and Koki (Japanese translation: second part). Both of these parts are taught within Connect with Reiki teachings.

By looking at the elements that make up the complete system of Reiki we can see how Okuden enhances the practice of the student.

Course outline

  • Developing spiritual and mental focus
  • Emphasis continues to be placed on developing the spiritual and mental connection using the five precepts.
  • Techniques and meditations
  • Additional traditional techniques and meditations are taught.
  • Hands on healing

The physical practice on the ‘self’ continues. Working on others for the purpose of healing takes on a professional edge. The Okuden Course includes greater detail on how to work professionally as a Practitioner.

Mantras and symbols

Three of the four mantras and symbols are taught, along with their descriptions and uses.

Reiju/Attunements

Three Reiju and/or attunements take the student’s energetic connection a step further.

The major new element of Okuden is the learning of three mantras and symbols. The course contains specific information about how to use each of these mantras and symbols.

Traditional techniques that further develop the student’s connection to the energy are also taught.

Since some Okuden students would like to explore offering Reiki professionally the course includes specific information on working in public practice. It also includes the keeping of records on the client’s treatment and medical history.
