How I work
Initially trained in humanistic, person-centred counselling, I now describe my approach as pluralistic, which means that I believe there are many different ways I can help my clients and how I work with someone will depend on what they want from therapy and how they would prefer to work towards their therapy goals. My educational background is in Philosophy, and I definitely bring my understanding of Socratic dialogue, existentialism, phenomenology and dialectics into my work, as well as particular models of therapy I've been trained in, some of which are described below:
IFS (Internal Family Systems Therapy)
IFS is a fantastic way of working with clients having physical, behavioural or mental health symptoms due to adverse childhood experiences, such as physical or emotional neglect, physical or emotional abuse, sexual abuse, household dysfunction, being bullied at school, parents divorcing, etc.
Such experiences can cause you to have to adapt to others' needs and expectations, cutting you off from your true Self and locking you into "survival mode". IFS can help shift your way of being in the world from surviving to thriving, through understanding and healing those frightened and wounded parts of you, so that you can become the fully integrated, free and autonomous person you were meant to be.
EFT (Emotional Freedom Therapy)
A growing number of counsellors and psychotherapists, like me, are integrating EFT into our work with clients and finding that what can be achieved in just a few sessions is astonishing, compared to our experience of what might be achieved with regular talking therapies alone. One of the best things about EFT is how easy it is to teach clients how to use the technique to help themselves. The result is that clients find real and profound relief from their symptoms in just a few sessions, rarely needing long-term therapy. And clients leave therapy with the confidence that they have a very effective tool to help them deal with and manage their emotions and whatever challenges and upsets life throws their way!
Often referred to as "Psychological Acupressure", EFT works by releasing blockages within the body's energy system. These blockages are the source of emotional pain, often resulting in symptoms which can be emotional and/or physical and include lack of confidence and self esteem, feeling stuck, anxious or depressed, or the emergence of compulsive and addictive behaviours. By releasing these blockages, clients find profound relief from symptoms like these. It is also widely accepted that emotional disharmony is a key factor in physical symptoms and dis-ease and for this reason EFT is being extensively used on physical issues, including chronic illness, often with astounding results. As such, EFT is being accepted more and more in medical and psychiatric circles.
RTT (Rapid Transformational Therapy) Hypnosis
RTT is a form of hypnotherapy based on neuroscience, which offers fast, effective results by combining the most beneficial principles of hypnotherapy and psychotherapy, CBT, IFS and NLP. With RTT we can discover the root, the cause and the reason for your issue, and the limiting beliefs that have been holding you back. You can achieve rapid, permanent change, by reimagining past events, and freeing yourself of the hold they've continued to have on you. Reclaim your voice, your power and your self-worth, and reconnect with the extraordinary confidence you were born with. RTT rewires your brain for success and opens you up to possibilities you may previously have believed were unavailable to you.
While you're in the hypnotic state, you're highly suggestible and receptive to the positive and explicit personalised instructions included in your session to direct your subconscious to consolidate the desired change through repetition. You'll be supplied with a self-hypnosis recording, which you can listen to as many times as you need.
While you’re in a state of hypnosis, images, thoughts and impressions that appear in your awareness are interpreted into a cohesive narrative of a past life. Typically, you’ll be guided through the significant events of at least two past lives. And for each life described, you’ll be taken through a ‘life review’, where the purpose of that lifetime, the lessons learned, and decisions made are examined from the perspective of your higher self, often resolving long-standing problems and issues, the causes of which have continued to elude you.
Training, qualifications & experience
I have a First Class Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy, an Advanced Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and a Higher Education Certificate in Psychology.
I started working in private practice in 2011, offering a general counselling service. Before that, I worked for two years in a counselling role at the top FE college in Lincolnshire, working with young people at risk. I also gained experience of working with diverse client groups as a volunteer counsellor over a three year period for Mind in Corby and Kettering and at the Northants Youth Advisory Service. During this period, I undertook further training in Transactional Analysis and CBT.
I relocated to Llandudno and launched Looking-Glass Counselling in February 2014. Soon after that I began my training in EFT, studying under one of EFT's Founding Masters, Tania Prince, and qualified as an Accredited Advanced Practitioner in 2015.
I have a long-standing interest in esoteric ideas and in exploring alternative approaches to therapy. Over the years, I've pursued further training in a variety of approached, and have developed my own "counselling style". I have amassed an eclectic set of therapeutic tools, and all of this has come to "flavour" the way I work.
Over the years since establishing my practice, I've studied and trained in Existential Counselling, Transactional Analysis, Mindfulness, Pluralistic Counselling, DBT and CBT. I'm also interested in coaching, and I've trained in Strategic Intervention, working with Human Needs theory. I am also a certified Past-Life Therapist and a Registered RTT Practitioner (Rapid Transformational Therapy).
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
