About me

New parent support is a service that has been established to offer help and guidance through one of life’s most momentous changes. It is a service to help any new parent and also offers specialist support for postnatal depression / anxiety.

When a baby arrives the changes it brings can be immense and overwhelming. Almost every aspect of a parent’s life changes overnight and suddenly life is full of new responsibilities, new roles and new routines to try to adapt to. First time parents have often had no experience with the daily tasks that need to be completed to take care of a baby. It can often leave parents feeling unskilled, unsure and they can experience a complete loss of confidence. It can mean losing a sense of your own competence and a loss of your life before having a baby. There are very few life transitions that can compare to the introduction of a baby into your life.

In addition parents are sold the idea that the arrival of a baby should be a time full of love, happiness and bliss which can often be quite damaging when a parent is struggling. Often the fear and anxiety can block the path to these feelings of love and connection. Many factors can contribute to this such as a traumatic birth, lack of support or quite simply feeling overwhelmed with it all.

New parent support offers a place where parents can come to receive help in a completely confidential, non-judgemental environment. Kathryn is an experienced therapist, a parent and understands very well that being a parent can be the most challenging role there is.

A session lasts for 1 hour and offers parents some time where they can talk about their experiences, receive understanding and also explore strategies to help them through this transition. As a mental health clinician Kathryn has a variety of tools and techniques she can share to help deal with anxiety, depression and intrusive thoughts. She is very passionate about working with parents in a way that is unique to them, to find strategies that help them to parent their children in the way that they wish to and find their confidence in this role.

        Further information

Sessions are held at The Windmill Studio, Ruislip. The rooms are comfortable, quiet and private.

There is parking next to the building (discounted rate for Hillingdon First card holders). The building is opposite Ruislip Manor tube station (Metropolitan line) and is easily accessible by public transport.

One of the barriers to seeking support can often be that parents are unable to leave their baby. Should this be the case then parents are welcome to bring their baby, changing facilities are available and equipment such as bouncers, floor mats can be provided if requested.
