I have been practising acupuncture and Chinese medicine for nearly 40 years. I trained in the UK and in China. I am a member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), the main body regulating professional acupuncturists in the UK. The BAcC ensures that it’s members maintain high standards of education, practice and ethics, and requires me to maintain a high standard of practice skills through continuing professional development (CPD). I have full professional indemnity insurance.
I am a member of the Acupuncture Fertility Network (AFN), a professional body for acupuncturists supporting men and women with fertility related problems.
Although I mainly practise Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), I am well versed in many different styles of acupuncture.
I aim to provide a warm and professional environment for your treatment. I use Chinese medicine to treat you as a whole person. I look at your unique energy system in order to understand how it’s flow and balance may be damaged, blocked, and unbalanced. I look for the weaknesses, the strengths, and how your system can be rebalanced, harmonised, remedied, reinvigorated. As part of the treatment, I will suggest ways in which you can, depending on your condition, help to improve and maintain your continuing health and well-being.
In addition to acupuncture, and when necessary and appropriate, I can offer you guidance on diet (food can be used as part of the treatment in Chinese medicine), dietary supplementation (vitamins and minerals), remedial exercise (including Qigong), relaxation/meditation, and stress management.
I have a Special Interest in the following
- Female and male infertility
- Gynaecology / Menstrual problems
- Headache / Migraine
- Digestive disorders
- Respiratory disorders, including Hayfever and Rhinitis
- Pain management, low back pain, sports injuries, musculo-skeletal impairment
- Emotional problems including Stress, Anxiety, Depression, Insomnia
- Problems affecting mid-life and the elderly.
I CAN OFFER ON-LINE CONSULTATIONS via Skype, Facetime, Whereby or WhatsApp. I am able to offer health advice and guidance, as well teaching self treatment techniques. Based primarily on Chinese medicine principles, this involves diet, exercise, relaxation and meditation (see above). This is an important part of my normal treatment programme, enabling patients to begin the important process of managing their symptoms. It can help to improve your immune system by addressing weaknesses and imbalances which may affect your resistance to illness.
Optimise your digestion: Simple methods to improve absorption and transmission of food; deal with common digestive problems; manage food intolerances.
Improve Lung capacity and breathing: Simple exercises to manage and improve lung capacity.
Calm the Spirit, Quieten the Mind: Relaxation and meditation.
Use acupuncture points as ‘pressure points': How to locate important acupuncture points; massage and activate points.
Training, qualifications & experience
I trained in acupuncture in the UK at the International College of Oriental Medicine for three years, graduating with a BAc in 1981.
In 1984 I traveled to China to study at the Nanjing College (now University) of TCM and at the Jiangsu Provincial Hospital, also in Nanjing. I revisited Nanjing for further clinical studies in 1987, and again in 1992, when I spent 5 weeks intensively studying Qigong and Taiji, the principles of which I apply in my clinical practice.
I was a founder director of the London School of Acupuncture in 1985 and continued in this role until 1997, during which time I taught acupuncture at the School. The School merged with the University of Westminster in 1997 to create the UK's first BSc degree course in Acupuncture. I have taught many well known practitioners and have been an external examiner for two acupuncture colleges in the UK. I continued to teach at the University until 1998 when I decided to concentrate my work in Dorset.
For ten years I worked closely with fertility specialist Michael Dooley at The Poundbury Clinic, using acupuncture to support patients with fertility issues and having fertility treatment, for example IVF. This continues to be a significant part of my practice.
To keep abreast of new developments, I engage in an ongoing process of education and research: as a subscriber to medical journals and online news services; by attendance at seminars and conferences; and by participation in online 'webinars'.
