About me

I qualified as an Alexander Teacher in 1995. I enjoy teaching the Technique to individuals at my practice in Hampstead Garden Suburb/Temple Fortune, and also run introductory groups.  I aim to teach in a way that is enjoyable, interactive and enlightening, as well as making a positive difference to a person's state of mind and body in the short term, and their overall health and wellbeing in the long term.

Many of my students come to me seeking to free themselves from aches and pains that may be the result of years of poor postural habits e.g back pain, neck ache and shoulder pain. Some come because they wish to perform a particular activity with greater ease (e.g. singing, playing an instrument or a sport, or simply using a computer or driving a car) or because they want to improve their posture and/or general well-being. I work with older and frailer people to help them improve balance and mobility. However I am also committed to working with children and teenagers, to raise awareness of the importance of HOW we move, stand, sit, write etc, in order either to prevent the development of harmful habits or at least to correct them sooner rather than later.

My students often tell me that they find the experience of having an Alexander very "calming", and that they not only feel more relaxed afterwards, but also "lighter" and "taller".

Training, qualifications & experience

I qualified from a STAT approved training course (i.e. 3 years full-time training) in 1995, and am certified as an Alexander Teacher both by STAT (Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique) and ATI (Alexander Teaching International).

I have an MA in English Literature from Cambridge University, a Certificate in Counselling Skills (CAC) and am qualified as an NLP Master Practitioner.

I have been teaching the Alexander Technique since 1995, primarily from my private practice in Hampstead Garden Suburb, but also to groups run by community organisations.

        Further information

"I have found this technique to be most beneficial and Carolyn always ensures the lessons are informative and tailored to one’s lifestyle.  Carolyn is an excellent and caring teacher and I always feel wonderful after each session." - P.D.

"I started to see Carolyn for help with pains in my hip. After just 3 sessions my hip substantially improved, but in addition the sessions have helped my whole body awareness. Consequently I am feeling benefits throughout my body from an improved posture and movement. The calmness of the Carolyn’s manner and approach has been wonderful for me and I feel positive and empowered whenever I leave." - Jan Doole

"The Alexander Technique has helped me improve my posture and feel more confident. I will remember to widen my shoulders and sit on my sitting bones. I will also remember to stop and think before I do things and to be more aware of the world around me. I won’t over-straighten my back or go from slouching to sitting up straight immediately.  Thank you very much for being my teacher and for teaching me the techniques so I can help myself." - Beth (age 14)

"Very calming and rebalancing" - Julia Lampshire
