The benefits of being grounded

When stressed, we often feel as if we are spinning out of control as we rush from one thing to another, struggling with concentration and maintaining focus. This is often a sign that our energy is stuck in our higher chakras and we have become ungrounded.

A simple grounding exercise can be extremely useful at work too, before big meetings or presentations. Or simply to help your concentration.

Being grounded brings us into the present moment and is important for good physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health

It reconnects us to the beautiful, protective, and calming energies of mother earth. Bringing our energy back down through our entire body creates feelings of stability, balance and calm, as well as renewed focus and awareness.

Taking one minute to start your day off with a simple grounding exercise can make the world of difference, helping you handle whatever the day throws at you more effectively.

A grounding exercise to help with stress

Get out of bed and stand up straight with your feet hip-width apart. Start to inhale deeply through your nose, bringing the air up from the bottom of your belly, up through your chest, filling your lungs, up through your throat and to the top of your head. Really fill your lungs with air, feeling them expand to their maximum.

At the top of your breath, pause gently and then begin to exhale slowly through your nose. Feel your breath moving down through your body, from your head, through your throat, on down through your chest, your belly, and when you reach the tops of your legs, imagine roots growing down each leg, through the soles of your feet and on into the ground below (regardless of where you are; inside or outside - even on an aeroplane!).

Picture these roots going deep into the ground below, and on down as far as they will go until they can go no further. If they get stuck at what feels like a shallow place, take another deep breath and with the next exhalation push them down further. When they feel they are deep enough, visualise the roots spreading out wide, to the front and the back, the left and right.

As you do this feel yourself firmly rooted to the ground, like a strong oak tree. You can do one round or several rounds of breath, depending on how much time you have. You can also use the in-breath to draw beautiful mother earth energy back up through your body to the top of your head. Become aware of how your energy has become balanced throughout your entire body and feel your fragmented, high-intensity energy replaced with this new strong, steady and calming energy. Start to notice the difference in how you feel before and after this exercise.

Other ways to ground yourself are to spend time in nature; whether that's sitting on a park bench, gardening, walking, standing barefoot on the grass, sitting beneath a large tree, or walking along a river or beach. Anything that connects you with nature and the beautiful energy from mother earth is good. You can also use grounding exercises, such as this one, or meditation. Enjoy the peaceful, yet quietly powerful feeling of being fully grounded.
