Homeopathy and holistic health

As a homeopath, my primary focus is to bring you back to a balanced, healthy state using homeopathic remedies. However, it's a good idea to make some very simple changes as well so you remain healthy without constant homeopathic support. I firmly believe that the most important things that affect our health are:

Our bodies are constantly working in our best interests to keep us in tip top condition and therefore need to be supplied with the right balance of vitamins, minerals, carbs, protein and fats on a daily basis. When you feed your body properly, not only will you feel better and have more energy but your skin and hair can improve and you can sleep better. As a general rule, remember the following: 80% of your food should come from a Farm, Field or a Forest – not from a Factory!

60% of what we put on our skin ends up in our blood
Whilst many of us are used to reading labels of the foods we eat, many of us are not so particular about the personal care products we use every day. Our skin is our largest organ of detoxification (the liver is the MAIN organ but is obviously small by comparison to our body’s surface area!). Think about how many products you use every day before any food or drink passes your lips – shampoo, conditioner, body wash / soap, shaving cream, face creams etc etc. Even expensive products may contain harmful, toxic ingredients that you absorb through your skin and then your body has to expend effort in detoxifying them. Please check the labels and ingredients of everything you are using to ensure that you are giving your body the best possible chance to heal.

Most people – me included – need to think consciously to ensure that they drink enough water on a daily basis since the drinks we naturally go for are generally caffeinated, carbonated or cordials which do not contribute to good hydration. The easy way to tell if you are dehydrated is the colour of your urine – by late morning, it should be a very pale yellow. 6-8 glasses of water a day is recommended although that clearly depends on your size and age. Remember that green tea, whilst having many health benefits, is in fact caffeinated. For children, the very best drink is of course plain water. If your child absolutely refuses to drink it, you could flavour it yourself by putting some fruit they enjoy such as orange, apple and lemon slices in a jug of water that they then drink during the day. Experiment with different combinations and you are sure to find one they – and perhaps you – will happily drink. Much cheaper than squash as well!

Stress Reduction
Everyone encounters some form of stress on a daily basis and learning how to deal with it is really important if you want to stay healthy. Find a way to relax on a daily basis – it needn’t take more than 10-20 minutes if that’s all the time you have.

I don’t need to tell you that you should move! Many of us do not do enough exercise and you will know if you are one of them. Find something that you can easily fit into your routine.

And finally...
Hold on to the thought that, whatever your symptoms are currently, they are your body’s way of getting you to sit up and take notice of what your body really needs you to address. Adopting some simple measures will certainly make you healthier – it may not be immediate though so be patient and stay optimistic.

I hope that you have found this abridged version helpful and it has inspired you to take a few simple steps towards better health.
