Taking care of your body and mind is hugely important – we are strong advocates of self-care and encourage scheduling time for ‘you’ each day. But achieving self-love can be an entirely different journey.
While everybody is unique and will often take a different route, here are our top tips for achieving self-love, or at least taking the first steps.
Take care of your body
Health plays a big part in our overall well-being. Eating healthy, nutritious meals and making sure you get your body moving is a great first step to self-love. You don’t have to join a gym and workout five times a week – if you want to do that, go for it – but if you aren’t able, or aren’t ready to go all out in a new exercise regime, just ensure you set aside time to move your body. This may be a walk, a swim, joining a yoga class or taking up a sport with friends.
Sometimes it’s the smallest tweaks to your routine that make the biggest difference, take a look at our ‘Small changes to boost health’ blog for more tips and tricks.
Take care of your mind
As well as taking care of your body with nutritious foods and physical activity, you need to take care of your mind. Mental health is just as vital and physical health, so schedule in times where you can ‘simply be’.
Try to set aside a moment once or twice a week to rest and relax. Do what you love, whether it be reading, writing or drawing. Whatever calms your mind. You may need to practise this, but soon enough you’ll learn what works and what doesn’t.
Reflect on achievements
Something we believe to be very important is reflecting on your successes. We don’t compliment ourselves enough. We can easily compliment a friend or family member, but when the tables are turned, we turn shy and embarrassed, as if we’re unable to acknowledge something we have achieved.
One way to really acknowledge your skills and what you have previously achieved is to write it down. Nobody needs to see this, but take a moment before bed or when you wake up, to write down every single thing you have achieved. You’ll be surprised at how much you’ve done – be proud!
Write down your future goals
Along with reflecting on your past successes, taking time to think about your future goals can also be effective. This helps to give you direction and boost motivation. You may not know what you want to do in 10 years time, but instead, write down what you would like to achieve in the next 12 months. This may be career-related or even learning a new skill.
Focus on what you love about yourself
Many of us are guilty of picking out things we dislike about ourselves, whether it be personality or appearance. Instead of focusing on the negatives, think about what you like. Be proud of the person you are and love the body you are in. Stop comparing yourself to others – you are you, nobody else.
Be with nature
Spending time outside is great for overall wellness and mental clarity. Sit in the garden after work or go for a walk to your local woods. It doesn’t have to be long, but breathing in the fresh air and looking at the world can really help to clear the mind after a busy day.
