According to figures pulled together by the Economic and Social Research Council, one in 10 of us are now taking some form of medication in a bid to help us sleep, with a 2011 report from the Mental Health Foundation finding that 37% of individuals claim to suffer from insomnia and only 39% describing themselves as “good sleepers”.
So what can be done to remedy the nations disjointed sleep without the help of sleeping pills?
Last week Kevin Morgan, a leading sleep specialist and professor of gerontology at the University of Loughborough suggested that the NHS start to look beyond the use of sleeping pills and instead train up staff to provide psychological therapies which may be of benefit.
Therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for example, may provide a more long-term solution than sleeping pills, and also has the benefit of being side effect free.
Experts have also argued that taking sleeping pills fails to address the underlying cause of the sleep problem in the first place, instead simply wallpapering over the cracks without attempting to tackle the issue at its core.
