The work of art therapy students goes on display in a gallery

A school specialising in Art Therapy has had the work of students displayed in a local gallery.

The Openart Studio funded by both County Durham and Darlington Primary Care Trust and Darlington Borough Council was set up with a view to improving the mental well being of individuals in the local area.

The studio uses art in various forms to relieve stress, promote relaxation and to develop social skills and confidence in students

Thirty pieces of work that were produced by the art therapy students have now been put on display at the Darlington Arts Centre as part of an exhibition entitled Let Your Light Shine Through.

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy with a difference, using the art media as a mode of communication. This form of therapy is particularly effective for individuals who find it difficult to express themselves verbally, instead offering another way for people to express their feelings.
