Researchers from the Department of Oncology, Princess Margaret Hospital, Hong Kong, China, conducted a study to see if aromatherapy and massage therapy in combination could relieve constipation in advanced cancer patients.
The study involved various groups of individuals including a control group, a massage group and an aroma massage group.
In order to measure the effect of aromatherapy, the severity of constipation was measured using an assessment scale and by monitoring the frequency of bowel movements.
The results of the study showed that the individuals in the aroma massage group experienced a significant improvement in their bowel movements and showed an improved quality of life.
“The findings of this study suggest aroma massage can help to relieve constipation in patients with advanced cancer,” the researchers noted.
