Desk for success - Feng Shui your workspace

Feng Shui Map

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice involving organising physical objects in a particular way so as to attract positive energy. The art of Feng Shui is based on the idea that everything in our surrounding environment has an impact on our inner life, and thus the placement of objects in a certain space will impact the flow of chi (life force) within that space.

The office can be an uncomfortable environment - think stiff chairs, bad lighting and constant disruptions. So, if you’re looking to feel more at ease at work and you want to set some good vibrations flowing around your desk, see our tips below on how to Feng Shui your desk.

The Bagua Map

The Bagua Map is a nine-part grid depicting the different areas of space (living room, office, desk etc.) and how they correspond to life. If you imagine the space in front of ‘career and life purpose’ as the front entrance (e.g. the door to the room or the front of your desk), use the gridlines as a blueprint for arranging your furniture and/or items within the most relevant spot.

Arranging your desk

Now comes the exciting part – arranging your desk to promote the flow of positive energy.

Imagine that the top of your desk is divided into the nine-part Bagua grid and choose a few areas of your life that you feel would benefit from a little boost (don’t focus on too many at once). Each section is associated with a colour, so to boost the effects further use items of that colour if you have them.

  1. Abundance and ProsperityColour - purpleThe back left corner of your desk represents prosperity. Use this space to attract wealth. This is a good place for a plant or indeed for your computer.
  2. Fame and ReputationColour – redTrying to get your boss to notice you? Try placing your business cards here or a motivational image that highlights either who you are or a great achievement e.g. a graduation photo.
  3. Love and RelationshipsColour – pink To attract romance brighten your desk with a single flower in the back right corner. If you already have a partner, pop a photo of them here.
  4. CreativityColours – gold, silver, copper, white Get your creative juices flowing by placing a notebook or something you find inspiring to the right centre of your desk.
  5. Helpful People and TravelColour - greyIf you feel like you need a little help from friends or colleagues, the front right section of your desk is a great location for your phone or address book. This spot also represents travel so a photo of your dream spot could also work well.
  6. CareerColour – black Keep this spot free from clutter or display affirmations or motivational quotes in this area.
  7. Knowledge and WisdomColour – blueIf you’re finding it hard to pick up some new learning material, place a reference book in the front left corner of your desk.
  8. FamilyColour – greenPop a photo of your family in this spot.
  9. HealthColour – yellowSitting at your desk all day certainly won’t do you any wonders in the health department, but there are ways to promote health even while working. Keep this area of your desk free from too much clutter in order to attract good energy here.
