About me

MFL Sports Clinic is a brand new Sports Therapy service, opened in Stroud, providing professional assessment, diagnosis, manual therapy treatment and rehabilitation for sports injuries or conditions.

MFL provides a complete assessment and a wide variety of manual therapy treatments such as: Deep tissue sports massage, medical acupuncture, soft tissue release techniques, joint mobilisations, personalised rehabilitation exercises and advice to include your goals, and much more, to help you back on the road to recovery as quickly as possible and maintain a fully functional and healthy lifestyle.

Training, qualifications & experience

MADELEINE LOWSON, MSc, MSST, Clinical Director & Lead Sports Therapist

MADDYMadeleine Lowson is a fully qualified MSc Sports Therapist, achieving a Distinction award in her Master's Degree in Sports Therapy from the University of Gloucestershire, and a previous BSc degree in Exercise Science (Health and Rehabilitation) from Bournemouth University.

Madeleine has gained a vast amount of experience within clinics, hospitals, sports teams and physical working environments, increasing her knowledge of anatomy and physiology, confidence in examination and assessment of clients, and producing adequate and professional manual therapy treatment and rehabilitation related to the confirmed diagnosis.

Madeleine has had the fantastic opportunity of working alongside the soft tissue specialist at Gloucester Rugby Team and the Tongan International Rugby Team providing sports massages in the lead up to their next games.

As a team player herself, Madeleine understands the importance of reducing the risk of injury, taking great pride in her work and professionalism and is motivated towards delivering enthusiastic service and interaction where patients' needs are a priority and their health and well-being is of paramount importance.

Madeleine has a high interest in running and has completed a number of continuous professional development courses in "Evidence Based Injury Prevention in Runners (Bridging the Rehab to Performance Gap)", providing her with the knowledge to prevent/rehabilitate injuries in runners, 'Spinal Mobilisation and Manipulation', increasing her skills to provide pain relief for individuals with issues related to the spine, 'Acupuncture-Dry Needling' and is continuing to develop her knowledge.

JESSICA GATES, MSc, MSST, Sports Therapist

Jess ProfileJessica Gates is a graduate Sports Therapist, achieving her MSc at the University of Gloucestershire, following the completion of a BSc in Sports and Exercise Sciences at the University of Exeter.

Throughout her studies Jessica gained extensive experience through placements within both private clinics and sports teams. This was a fantastic opportunity to work within very different environments and with a wide range of patients. This has enabled Jessica to enhance her skills to confidently examine, treat and rehabilitate injuries with clear clinical reasoning. Jessica was fortunate to complete work experience with the Scarlet’s Rugby Team. Working with a professional sports team has given her valuable understanding into the treatment and rehabilitation of sports injuries in order to help players return to varying levels competition.

As a keen sportsperson herself, this has also developed her keen interest in musculoskeletal screening and injury prevention in addition to delivering a professional service where the patient’s needs, goals and well-being are a priority. As a passionate therapist, Jess is always looking to improve her knowledge and skills through various continued professional development courses. Providing the best possible service and keeping up to date with research is something Jess recognises the importance of.

As well as being a conscientious therapist and keen sportsperson Jessica has spent a significant amount of time travelling and surfing throughout Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. Additionally she has spent a lot of time in South Africa where she volunteered within an AIDS hospice an orphanage and various other community projects.

What is Sports Therapy?:
Sports Therapy is a specialised degree-based health profession, concerned with preventing injuries through manual therapy treatment and exercise rehabilitation.

Sports therapists are health-care professionals with the knowledge, skills and ability to:

  • Focus on returning clients to their optimum levels of functional, occupational and sports specific skills and fitness, utilising the principles of sport and exercise science to optimise performance and prepare individuals for injury prevention.
  • Examine, assess, treat and, where appropriate, refer on for specialist advice
  • Provide immediate care of injuries
  • Provide appropriate manual therapy treatment
  • Plan and deliver appropriate rehabilitation programmes to prepare individuals for sport or occupational activities.
