About me

I am a qualified Consulting Medical Herbalist with a BSc degree in Herbal Medicine with first-class honours and I am a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists. I offer one-to-one consultations at About Balance in central Brighton and at the Brighton Apothecary.

Herbal Medicine is the use of whole plant medicines to treat ill-health. I can offer support with a wide range of health conditions (see below). I am passionate about helping people take back control over their health with the help of herbs, nutrition and lifestyle management. I believe herbal medicines can work deeply to aid the body's own healing processes.

What can Herbal Medicine Treat?

Conditions frequently seen by Western Herbalists include:

- Hormonal Issues
- Stress, anxiety and depression
- Sleep problems
- Digestive complaints
- Skin complaints
- Fertility support
- Immune system support
- Low energy
- Chronic health problems
- Respiratory and Heart health

Herbal medicine can also be used to try to address many other health issues.
Herbal medicine comes in a variety of forms including liquid extracts (tinctures) teas, creams, ointments or capsules.

Consultations with Jessie

Your first Herbal Medicine consultation with Jessie will take up to 1.5hrs where she will ask to hear all about your problem and then she will ask you questions about your background, health history, diet and lifestyle to try to get to the root cause of your problem. Jessie is trained in medical diagnostics and may perform a physical examination if necessary, she may also take your blood pressure.

After the first consultation Jessie will then provide you with an individually tailored herbal medicine prescription alongside lifestyle and nutritional advice if needed. This will take into account any existing medication you may already be taking. You will then receive a written report detailing your treatment plan.

Follow-up appointments will then be 30-45 minutes long for ongoing support and to track your progress. Herbal medicine usually needs to be taken for a number or weeks or months for optimum effect.

Jessie is trained in conventional pathology and disease and in some cases she may recommend you seek further diagnostic testing from your GP whilst working with her to help clarify your health issue or if she thinks you need further medical attention. She is happy to communicate with other medical professionals on your behalf if necessary. If you are on any existing medications she will take this into account with the herbs she prescribes for you, herbs can work alongside many drugs.
