Sitting on the sofa in front of the TV, when my mother walked in to the living room and mentioned she felt a small lump in her breast while showering. I asked her if the lump was soft & moved or if it was hard & fixed? She said it moved, however aware of the worst case scenario, I asked her to book an appointment with her GP.
One month later, I was sitting at her bedside after she had had surgery to have a cancers removed from her breast. Followed by 6 months of chemotherapy, 6 months of radiotherapy and 1 year of herceptin.
During this time, I grew up a lot and it gave me a bigger value for the time I had with my mother.
One day we visited the GP as my mother was getting a lot of aches and pains, as a result of some of the medications she was on. None of the medications of GP prescribed resolved her pain without causing additional serious side effects. Seeing her go through this I felt helpless. I heard of a nearby osteopath? and booked her in for an appointment. I didn’t know what osteopathy was but thought it was worth a try? What was the worst that could happen?
My mother walked out of the osteopaths feeling much better, her movement and pain had improved greatly and she was able to function a lot better. The osteopath treated my mother successfully without any drugs or surgery, using only his hands? I thought that was AMAZING!
Inspired, I resolved to change my degree and study osteopathy, with the hope that one day I would be able to treat my mother and make her feel better.
Over 10 years later and I have had the opportunity to help not only my mother but also hundreds of others. I love this job and wouldn’t trade it for anything. I hope to continue to help those in pain and someone once did for my mother.
