Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and physical therapy treatment for a wide range of medical conditions - General Osteopathic Council(GOsC).
An Osteopath is a whole body physical therapist who provides relief through looking at the causes of pain and not just the symptoms you present the Osteopath with.
Osteopathy has its closest medical links to Chiropractors and Physiotherapists although Osteopathy applies a whole body approach rather than pure muscle or spinal treatments. As with physiotherapy and chiropractors, Osteopaths work to treat the problem or symptom but as a further endeavour it is an Osteopaths main aim to locate the cause of the pain and to treat causes of pain and discomfort.
What to expect
Osteopathy is a holistic approach to the individual, where the person is assessed and treated as a whole. During the first consultation a full case history is taken, where occupation , lifestyle, medical and family history are taken into consideration. The osteopathic assessment consist of postural , musculo-skeletal assessment as well as use of special tests where appropriate, so the Osteopath can reach a working diagnosis. The osteopathic treatment could include gentle manipulation of spinal or peripheral joints to restore and enhance movement, soft tissue techniques (massage) , stretching and exercise prescription is also used to speed up recovery and bring the body back to optimum health.
One of the main considerations of Osteopathy is that it is safe at any age-from infants to senior citizens, Osteopathy is a safe and effective choice. Based in Westcombe Park, Blackheath, London SE3 it is also accessible to all from anywhere in London.
