I am a Modern Pilates Teacher with specialism in spine/shoulder/hip and knee conditions, Dru Yoga teacher, GP Referral Exercise Therapist (REPS level 4) with specialism in low back pain and Hanna Somatics Movement Coach. I deliver 1:1 training, classes and workshops on stress reduction, back care, the release of muscular tension and chronic pain management and rehabilitation. I also offer postural analysis and bespoke training programmes. I am currently training in Clinical Somatic Education with world renowned Clinical Somatics teacher and trainer, Martha Peterson. Now a final year student, I offer Clinical Somatic Education sessions as a trainee.
Clinical Somatic education is neuro-muscular movement re-education. It is sensory motor training (with a heritage in the Feldenkrais Method and Alexander Technique) that works at the level of the brain cortex on injury, spasm, unconscious stress responses and muscular amnesia to produce physiological changes. Muscles regain their length and pressure around joints is relieved. Mobility is restored and pain is alleviated and eliminated.
Somatics addresses pain and tightness caused by habituated/protective bracing, underuse/overuse of muscle groups, prolonged inactivity, maladaptive/dysfunctional movement patterns, stress/anxiety, unconscious tension and muscular spasm.
Clinical Somatics is a process of education for pain relief, better muscle control, improved movement patterns, relaxation and well-being that is best taken as a package of several sessions. The practitioner's goal is to teach you how to manage conditions yourself, restoring locus of control to the individual and empowering self-efficacy. The first sessions is 90 minutes and includes a consultation & assessment and then the requisite therapeutic touch, biofeedback & somatic exercises are tailored to your individual needs. Follow up sessions continually build on and expand on what has gone before, are also around 90 minutes.
Suitable for: muscular aches and pains; chronic pain; pain caused by compression of joints and structures; postural issues; back, neck, shoulder & hip pain; sciatica; frozen shoulder; altered gait; tension headaches; shallow breathing; repetitive strain; easing the physical symptoms of stress & anxiety.
