Remedial massage uses a variety of techniques to restore muscle balance and help remedy various musculoskeletal problems caused by issues such as postural imbalances, frequent computer use etc. It incorporates massage, manipulation of soft tissues and exercise and stretching advice to reduce symptoms of overuse injuries, treat muscular aches and pains and correct postural problems.
Remedial massage is a therapeutic deep tissue massage which is also used to speed up the healing process after injury. It is used but not limited to treat strains, sprains, muscle pulls, muscle tears and most injuries where the skin is intact. Deep tissue massage helps to remove blockages, damaged cells, scar tissue and adhesions left after injury, speeds up recovery and encourages more complete healing. It also increases blood and lymphatic flow, particularly in the areas being treated.
Remedial massage treats the whole body, identifying and treating the cause of the disorder and not just the symptoms after a thorough assessment of the condition of the athlete’s soft tissues through conversation, postural assessment and palpation.
Sports Massage is a speciality within Remedial Massage that uses the same range of clinical skills. Many ‘so called’ sports injuries are often caused by an athlete’s posture and/or other factors outside of their sport; however the weakness / injury becomes apparent during increased activity and pressure on the body’s tissues.
The real difference with sports massage is the focus on recovery from training and the early identification and treatment of potential soft tissue problems. Over a succession of treatments, the therapist can monitor how the client is responding to training. This can allow the athlete to ‘fine-tune’ their training to avoid injury and enhance performance.
Sports Massage uses similar techniques and principles as for Remedial Massage but is applied in a way that meets the specific needs of an athlete or active person and to help them achieve their optimum performance in their chosen sport, at the gym, or for a specific race / event. Regular treatments are a good way to monitor the effects of a training program and lifestyle by being able to gauge the condition of the muscles, ligaments and tendons from one treatment to the next.
Angela works from home to keep her charges (particularly packages) very competitive. She is a very friendly therapist who will talk through her treatments in detail, communicating clearly on what she is doing and why, and will ask for regular feedback on what is being felt, discomfort levels and where any stretch is being felt.
There is substantial free parking.
If you have been diagnosed with or suspect you may have a pre-existing medical condition you should consult your GP for advice, diagnosis and treatment and always inform your health professional before starting any alternative or additional therapies, treatments or making any major changes in your diet or exercise programme.
