The second degree – Okuden is also known as ‘practitioner level’ and is for anyone wanting to practice Reiki as a profession, or who wants to further their experience on their Reiki journey. Mikao Usui’s intention at this level was for furthering self-healing and spiritual development. This degree will take you to a deeper level of consciousness and oneness.

The five elements in relation to Okuden

After completing the first level (Shoden) within the system of Reiki, the student must practice on themselves. After a period of time, an Okuden student will have achieved a new level of confidence and balance. At this point, which is unique to each student, it will become time to begin working on the ‘self’ with a new level of energy – this level of energy is the essence of Okuden. Through Okuden, the student develops many of the skills taught in Shoden.

Okuden means ‘inner’ or ‘hidden' teachings, which means that the tools taught within this level are for your own spiritual development. These tools involve symbols and mantras.

Okuden traditionally contains two separate parts know as Zenki (Japanese translation: first part) and Koki (Japanese translation: second part). Both of these parts are taught within connect with Reiki teachings.

By looking at the elements that make up the complete system of Reiki we can see how Okuden enhances the practice of the student.

Hosted by Jenny Newman

Jenny teaches Reiki that has been practised in Japan since time began, long before Reiki was moved to the West. The early Reiki teachings consider that the Reiki System is not all about treatments, but about us, self discovery and our true selves. I volunteered for a Charity to go to Bosnia to treat war, torture and rape victims after the war.
