The study involved assigning 22 participants to an experimental group which was given a blend of oils – lemon, lavender and ylang ylang and then assigning a second group of twenty an artificial lemon fragrance of Limonene and Citral mixture.
Both groups inhaled their blend for two minutes, twice a day for three weeks.
When the experiment was complete there was a noticeable difference in the systolic blood pressure between the groups, although there was no difference in diastolic blood pressure. The researchers wrote: ”There was a notable difference in sympathetic nerve system activity of heart rate variability; however, the differences in aortic pulse wave velocity or the aortic augmentation index were not significant.”
